Welcome to the Russian searchable database on
the United Nations Convention for the International Sale of Goods (CISG),
adopted at the United Nations Conference on Contracts for the International
Sale of Goods, held in Vienna, 10 March - 11 April 1980.
The CISG is an international agreement set in place to facilitate international trade, promote common understandings, remove legal barriers, improve efficiencies, and reduce costs. The CISG is a unique body of law, unparalleled in world history. It is based upon carefully balanced compromise of the Roman-German and Anglo-American law systems approaches. Countries whose aggregate share of world trade exceeds two thirds, with the number of participating countries continuing to increase, have adopted this Convention (as of October 1, 1999, it is effective for 56 countries, while the total of 57 have acceded to it).
This database aims to disseminate in Russia and abroad the information on the CISG and specific features of its role and application in Russian law, as well as to promote the better understanding in Russia of the CISG and peculiarities of its application in other countries.
This database is part of the Internet autonomous network of CISG websites.
The original idea to create this database belongs to Professor Albert H. Kritzer, the Executive
Secretary of the Institute of International Commercial Law, Pace University School of Law. The
database is produced as a free Internet resource and is edited by Alexandre Mouranov,
Candidate of Legal Science, Senior Lecturer of the Private International and Civil Law Chair at
the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) of the Russian Federation
Foreign Affaires Ministry, partner in the International Law Firm "Moscow International Center for
Entrepreneurship & Co.", and Margaret Slavina, Bachelor of law, International Trade Law
department graduate, Faculty of International Law, Moscow State Institute of International
Relations (University), in close collaboration with the Institute of International Commercial Law,
Pace University School of Law, with the assistance of the International Law Firm "Moscow
International Center for Entrepreneurship & Co." and under the auspices of the Moscow State
Institute of International Relations (University) of the Russian Federation Foreign Affaires Ministry.
The invaluable contribution to this database is the information provided by the drafters of the
CISG, arbitrators of the International Commercial Arbitration Court at the Russian Federation
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, authors of numerous scholarly writings on the CISG
Professor Sergei Lebedev, Head of the Private International and Civil Law Chair at the Moscow
State Institute of International Relations (University) of the Russian Federation Foreign Affaires
Ministry and Michael Rozenberg, Professor of the Private Law Chair at the Russian Academy of
Foreign Trade, Doctor of Legal Science.
Oleg Semenov, director of the firm “Partmotor GmbH” (Passau, Germany), author of the Russian
database on the CISG application in Germany by his materials significantly supported this
database creation.
In implementing this project considerable assistance was rendered by Oxana Mouranova, Ivan
Smirnov and Oleg Sosnin, associate with the International Law Firm "Moscow International
Center for Entrepreneurship & Co.". Technical and computer support was provided by Yury
Myakotin, employee of this firm. Natalya Pavlova, consultant with the Russian Federation High
Arbitration Court, ought to be mentioned with thanks separately. This database would have never
come into existence without the assistance of Vladimir Stepanov and Yuri Monastyrsky, partners
in the International Law Firm "Moscow International Center for Entrepreneurship & Co.". Lastly,
it was Olga Ovsyannikova, employee of the same firm, whose invaluable skills and energy made
the successful completion of this project possible.
