Knowledge of court hierarchies can enlighten, particularly in view of the idiosyncrasies of some jurisdictions. For example, in the State of New York, the "Supreme Court" is a court of 1st instance; whereas the New York "Court of Appeals" is equivalent to the Supreme Court of another jurisdiction.
